Ōrewa Library, Auckland
Once, Ōrewa Library was a small building ill-equipped to contain hundreds of thousands of annual visitors… but no longer.
After twelve months and $6.3 million worth of redevelopment, this library has been transformed into a community hub. A mezzanine floor has been built for meetings and group events, and a new children’s section has been created.
When faced with these grand changes, it may be easy to overlook safety features like stair nosing. However, we at Freedom Works believe that these details exemplify what Ōrewa Library is about: public wellbeing.
Stair nosing reduces slip risks and prevent accidents as people travel the library’s new spaces. The bright anodised aluminium bases make the edge of each step highly visible, and the carborundum strips are highly durable and slip-resistant. As the upgraded library is expected to draw many more visitors, it's essential to select high-quality and long-lasting products that will withstand heavy foot traffic.
Those of us who appreciate aesthetic design will also note the pleasing contrast between the silver-black stair nosing and the oceanic carpet. This was a deliberate effect; Freedom Works products are designed to complement their surroundings.
Stair nosing is absolutely essential for code compliance, but safety detailing is about more than just ticking a box. It's about finding the right fit for each unique project, and achieving a precise balance between practicality and visuals.
